Pursuant to the provisions of Article V of the By-Laws of Local 8, this is official notice of the nominations and election of UNITE HERE Local 8 officers.  The nominations meeting will take place on Wednesday, October 14, 2020 at 4:30 p.m.  Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the nominations meeting will be held by video and phone conference only.

Any member who wishes to participate in the Nominations Meeting must RSVP no later than 12 Noon on Tuesday, October 13, 2020, the day prior to the Nomination Meeting.  Members may RSVP by following the instructions below.

Instructions to RSVP to Participate by Video

  1. Download and create a free Zoom account. Use https://zoom.us/download if you will use a computer, or download the Zoom Cloud Meeting app if you will use a smart phone.
  2. Register in advance for the meeting by going to http://local8.org/nominations
  3. Local 8 will check whether you are an active member in good standing of Local 8. If you are an active member in good standing, Local 8 will send you an email invite which you can use to participate in the Nominations Meeting by Zoom.  If you are not an active member in good standing, Local 8 will send you an email explaining what you need to do to become an active member in good standing.

Instructions to RSVP to Participate by Phone

  1. Register in advance for the meeting by going to http://local8.org/nominations or call Local 8 at 206-728-2326 or send an email to [email protected] with the following information: First and last name, where you work, and phone number you will be joining the meeting from.
  2. Local 8 will check whether you are an active member in good standing of Local 8. If you are an active member in good standing, Local 8 will give you a phone number you can use to call in to the Nominations Meeting.  If you are not an active member in good standing, Local 8 will explain what you need to do to become an active member in good standing.

All members in good standing may attend and make nominations at the nominations meeting.  Nominations may also be made by mail or email addressed to the Chairperson of the Election Committee at Unite Here Local 8 Election Committee, P.O. Box 9512, Seattle, WA 98109 or [email protected], provided such written nominations are received no later than 11:00 a.m. on October 14, 2020.  In order to be eligible to be nominated for office, members must be in attendance at the nominations meeting or they must have submitted a written statement to the Chairperson of the Election Committee at Unite Here Local 8 Election Committee, P.O. Box 9512, Seattle, WA 98109 or [email protected], prior to 11:00 a.m. on October 14, 2020 indicating their willingness to accept the nomination if their name is proposed.

Officers:  Nominations will be accepted for the following offices: President; Secretary-Treasurer; Vice President – Washington; Vice President – Oregon; Third Vice President; Fourth Vice President; Recording Secretary; Sergeant-at-Arms; Aide to President; Aide to Secretary-Treasurer; Aide to Vice President –Washington; Aide to Vice President – Oregon; Aide to Recording Secretary; and two (2) Trustees.

A member may be nominated for one office only.  No one shall be eligible to be nominated for an office unless they have been a member of Local 8 in continuous good standing for at least twenty-four (24) consecutive months immediately preceding October 2020; and are employed or available for employment in the jurisdiction of Local 8 or are an officer or employee of Local 8 or the International Union.

The Election Committee shall pass on the eligibility of all candidates and its decisions shall be subject to appeal to the President of UNITE HERE International Union.  The term for all officers is for three (3) years.

Any request to run as a slate must be submitted in writing to the Election Committee either in-person, by mail (Unite Here Local 8 Election Committee, P.O. Box 9512, Seattle, WA 98109) or by email ([email protected]) and must be received no later than 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 20, 2020 and must include candidates for at least two-thirds (2/3) of the separate categories of offices to be filled in the election and one (1) candidate for trustee.  Permission may be withheld if the slate designation requested is so similar to that selected by another slate as to mislead voters.  Any candidate may appeal to the President of UNITE HERE International Union a decision granting or denying designation as a slate.

The election will be conducted by secret ballot by mail.  Ballots will be mailed to all members in good standing on October 30, 2020.  To be in good standing in October 2020, dues through August 2020 must be paid.  A member who is not in good standing can be reinstated to membership and become eligible to vote by paying dues for October 2020. Dues can be paid by mailing a check to UNITE HERE Local 8, PO Box 84271, Seattle, WA 98124 or by credit card by calling (206) 728-2326. To ensure that a ballot will be mailed on October 30, dues payments must be received by the Local 8 dues office no later than October 29, 2020.

Local 8 has selected UniLect Corporation to administer the secret ballot officer election. If a ballot is not received or is spoiled, the member may request a ballot by contacting UniLect’s Ballot Request Call Center by phone at (855) 240-0363.  Ballots may be cast by mail only to the P.O. Box that will be included in the voter instructions. Ballots will be collected from the post office on Friday, November 20, 2020 at 11:30 a.m. and will be counted immediately thereafter at the Local 8 office, 2800 First Avenue, Room 252, Seattle, WA.  Any candidate shall have the right to have an observer, who is an active member in good standing of Local 8, present when the ballots are prepared and mailed, collected from the post office and counted.

Local 8 has not yet determined whether members will be able to observe the Ballot Count in person or via a live-streamed video.  Local 8 is committed to a process that protects everyone’s safety during the Covid-19 pandemic.  Members may check the Unite Here Local 8 website at www.unitehere8.org for announcements.

The installation of officers will take place on December 9, 2020.
